MAC and the Mohs Scale

The scale is named for its creator, the German geologist and mineralogist Friedrich Mohs. The Mohs Hardness Scale is used as a convenient way to help identify minerals. A mineral’s hardness is a measure of its relative resistance to scratching, measured by scratching the mineral against another substance of known hardness on the Mohs Hardness Scale.

Years before I started handling the marketing for Master Applied Coatings and Vinnie’s Northbay, I was a customer.

My husband and I took our truck and Airstream to MAC’s location in Tallahassee, Florida in early 2022 to have both vehicles coated. About a year later I reached out to the owners and offered to build websites for them because I knew I could write with integrity and insight regarding the quality of their product and our customer service experience.

I’ve decided to put some of my text messages with Briston and Vinnie into a blog to give short answers to questions I’ve had … Most came from me or my husband, Dave. And if you have a future topic you’d like us to cover, please drop us a note on our Facebook page.

We refer to our coating as ceramic because that’s the term most people are familiar with and that’s what they Google search when looking for exterior vehicle protection. But our coating is molecularly different than ceramic and that’s what makes it a nine on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Only a diamond is harder at 10.

Why is this important? First, is the obvious answer … The harder the shell the better the protection, but the second part of the answer is the longevity our product brings to the equation.

A customer should expect to get at least 15 years of protection from a single application under conditions of normal use.
— Briston Lowell, Owner and manager of MAC's Tallahassee location
  • There’s no special upkeep for our coating … No yearly touch up. It’s a once and done application.

  • Simply wash your rig with a quality, non-wax automotive soap and dry with a leaf blower or microfiber towel.

  • Our approach is customer centric, and we don’t make claims our product can’t support.

  • That’s unheard of in the ceramic industry.

Our product isn’t wax or like any ceramic product that can be bought online or in an auto parts store. It’s formulated and manufactured in the United States and is a one time application providing a permanent coating for the expected lifetime of the vehicle.

And that’s because our coating isn’t a traditional ceramic.

We’re extremely proud of our product and the way it consistently exceeds expectations. And we’re proud of our team of craftsman in Tallahassee and Sacramento, and opening soon … DALLAS!
